The Elk Spring is located high atop the Manti - La Sal National Forest in Emery County, Utah. The spring continually produces 300 gpm of fresh water. On two separate occasions this water has been entered into national competitions for “Best Tasting Water in the United States”. On both occasions this water source won second prize. Since the 1970’s the local county has been looking for a way to pipe this water to their residents. However, extremely steep and rugged terrain has prohibited the construction of the pipeline, until now. In September of 2008 REI commenced drilling a 2600’ borehole through hard sandstone. The borehole elevation rose more than 800’ and was drilled to punch out on the top of the mountain ridge near an access road. The borehole was enlarged using multi-pass reaming techniques and 5” HDPE pipe was pulled through the borehole. Another contractor trenched the remainder of the pipeline to county residents.
